Whitney Davis is Professor of History and Theory of Ancient and Modern Art in the Department of History of Art at UC Berkeley, which he chaired from 2001 to 2005. Previously he was John Evans Professor of Art History at Northwestern University and Director of the Kaplan Center for the Humanities at Northwestern. At Berkeley, he is a founding member and core faculty of the new Center for New Media. His publications include books on prehistoric, ancient Egyptian, and modern art and studies in the history of psychoanalysis and theory of sexuality, He is currently completing a book on archaeologies of the standpoint, based on his lectures as Research Forum Professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art this year, and on forms of analogical likeness, not limited to visual resemblance, in visual culture; both books use materials drawn from a variety of cultural and historical locations.
